On the first day of 2025, Ms. Duan and her family visited the Department of Urology at Yantai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, presenting a banner and a letter of gratitude filled with heartfelt appreciation and respect for the medical staff. Several months ago, Ms. Duan, who was 29 weeks pregnant, suddenly experienced severe pain in her left lower abdomen that did not subside, accompanied by nausea and vomiting—her condition was critical. Her family quickly rushed her to the hospital. An ultrasound examination revealed a strong echo mass about 1 cm in diameter at the initial segment of her left ureter, with hydronephrosis observed above it. The preliminary diagnosis was left hydronephrosis due to ureteral stones, which caused deep concern for both Ms. Duan and her family. After extensive inquiries, they finally found Dr. Yu Jianyong, director of the Department of Urology at Yantai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After receiving the patient, Chief Physician Yu Jianyong promptly organized a thorough discussion with his department's experts. Considering that Ms. Duan had large kidney stones, obvious symptoms, and hydronephrosis, failure to treat her in time could easily lead to infection, impaired kidney function, or even miscarriage, posing serious risks to both mother and fetus. However, formulating an effective treatment plan presented numerous challenges. Ms. Duan was in the late stages of pregnancy, making extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy strictly contraindicated. Conservative treatment would likely be ineffective, while conventional surgical approaches might adversely affect the fetus.

Under local anesthesia, a stent tube was inserted into the ureter from its opening into the bladder, aiming to drain urine, prevent worsening infection, and relieve pain. The procedure went smoothly. After successful stent placement, Ms. Duan’s pain significantly improved, and she was discharged safely after a stable recovery period.
On November 29, 2024, Ms. Duan delivered a healthy baby boy, and both mother and child were doing well. One month later, on December 29, Ms. Duan returned to our hospital’s Department of Urology for follow-up treatment to address her remaining stone issue. Using ureteroscopy, the urology team successfully removed the ureteral stone that had troubled her for days and simultaneously extracted the previously placed ureteral stent. The entire process proceeded smoothly, and Ms. Duan recovered well postoperatively, being discharged the following day. On New Year’s Day, her family visited the hospital to present a banner of gratitude, expressing heartfelt thanks to the medical staff.
